چکیده

Although Azospirillum spp. are considered to be important plant growth promoting bacteria, their possible effects on germination and vigor of aged lettuce seeds has not been previously evaluated. In fact, there is a paucity of published data about inoculation effects on seed germination. The aim of this work was to evaluate seed quality of oneyear aged lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Crimor INTA) seeds after Azospirillum brasilense Sp245 inoculation with or without an osmopriming pretreatment. Fresh lettuce seeds were stored in the dark in a dry chamber for one year and then subjected to inoculation with A. brasilense Sp245, to osmotic priming with 0.37 mol/L MgSO4, or to both combined treatments. Seed germination, seed vigor, and seedlings emergence percentages were determined, and the abnormal seedling fraction was characterized. Azospirillum brasilense inoculation without a previous osmopriming enhanced seed vigor and seedling emergence percentages and decreased the fraction of abnormal seedlings. There was an additional effect of osmopriming as a previous treatment on germination percentage. We concluded that the use of A. brasilense inoculation alone or after an osmopriming treatment would contribute to overcome the negative effects of ageing on lettuce cv. Crimor INTA seeds.

Individual and Combined Effects of Azospirillum brasilense and Pseudomonas fluorescens on Biomass Yield and Ajmalicine Production in Catharanthus roseus

In the present study, the effect of different plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) like Azospirillum brasilense and Pseudomonas fluorescens on growth parameters and the production of terpenoid indole alkaloids are investigated in two varieties ‘rosea’ and ‘alba’ of Catharanthus roseus. The production of IAA by the PGPR has taken as main criteria in the selection of PGPRs for the seed and...

Cadaverine production by Azospirillum brasilense and its possible role in plant growth promotion and osmotic stress mitigation

Polyamines are considered as plant growth regulating compounds; among them, cadaverine has been correlated with root growth promotion or osmotic stress mitigation in some plant species. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the capacity of bacterial Azospirillum brasilense Az39 strain to produce cadaverine in chemically defined medium and inoculated plants, and to correlate this capacity wi...

Benzyladenine in the Priming Solution Reduces Thermodormancy of Lettuce Seeds

When lettuce seeds are imbibed and subjected to high temperature for periods of 72 h or more, dormancy known as thermodormaney is induced. Priming of three cultivars of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) seeds in 1% (w/v) K3P O4 for 20 h in the dark reduced thermodormaney. Addition of 100 mg 6-benzyladenine (BA)/liter to the priming solution increased germination in petri dishes at 35C in ‘Green Lake...

Effect of Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense Strains on the Germination and Seedlings Growth of the Giant Columnar Cardon Cactus (Pachycereus pringlei)

Wild Cardon cactus seeds were inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense strains Cd and Sp-245 to improve seed germination and seedling growth parameters. Differential germination responses were related to the bacterial strain. A. brasilense Cd (the type strain for the species A. brasilense) significantly decreased seed germination. A. brasilense Sp245 (a known beneficial bacteria for cereal plant...
